Kansans increasingly seek information about their food and nutrition needs, about how to prepare easy and nutritious meals, and about physical activity.
Helping Kansans eat healthier and increase physical activity can improve their quality of life now and in the future and reduce health care costs. Learning to eat healthfully can also stretch food budgets.
In order to prevent foodborne illnesses, K-State University scientists and educators present information on safe food handling practices for the benefit of Kansans.
Nutrition
The 2015–2020 Dietary Guidelines were released Jan. 7, 2016 and are designed to help Americans eat a healthier diet. Intended for policymakers and health professionals, this edition of the Dietary Guidelines outlines how people can improve their overall eating patterns — the complete combination of foods and drinks in their diet. This edition offers 5 overarching Guidelines and a number of Key Recommendations with specific nutritional targets and dietary limits.

We are a leading institution in the area of food safety in teaching, research, and extension. Our goals are to educate consumers on safe food handling in the areas of food preparation, food preservation, food service, and more.

Food Preservation
Home food preservation is a way to preserve the freshness of homegrown food. While more popular in years past, preserving food at home is still done today. Without factoring in the labor costs, home food preservation can save money compared to commercially preserved foods.

Lifestyle choices you make have a major impact on your health and wellness. Research shows that those who take good care of themselves and make healthy lifestyle choices are healthier, happier, more productive, miss work less, and have lower health-care costs.
Wellness is much more than the absence of illness or disease, or successfully managing chronic disease. It emphasizes the whole individual, integrating the body, mind, and spirit. Everything we do, feel, think, and believe can impact our state of health.
We educate, support, and motivate Kansans to make healthy lifestyle choices that support total wellness.
